Creating a report to analyze project variances

You can create a report to analyze projects related to specific portfolios and understand how they are distributed based on the cost and schedule variances. This report is driven by the List of Portfolios report created earlier and based on the selected portfolio, data for all associated projects is displayed. This report helps a Portfolio Manager to understand the distribution of top projects categorized by the project status and analyze percentage in variances as compared to the planned cost and schedule. They can then isolate projects with huge variances and investigate the anomalies.

Perform the following steps in the Portfolio Overview dashboard that you have created as part of the Creating KPIs to analyze Portfolio costs and Creating a report to analyze variances in portfolios tasks:

  1. Click the icon from the toolbar and select Existing Dataset....
  2. In the Select Existing Dataset dialog box, navigate to the required ITPA folder and select ITPA_Project ITD.
  3. Click Select.

The ITPA_Project ITD iCube is added to the DATASETS panel:

  4. Click the Insert visualization icon from the toolbar to insert a blank visualization.

Tip: To change the position of the visualization, drag the visualization title bar and place it in the required position.

  5. Select the blank visualization and click the Bubble Chart visualization type.
  6. Perform the following steps from the ITPA_Project ITD iCube in the DATASETS panel:
    1. Drag the EVM_Cost Variance % metric into the Vertical field of the Editor panel.

    3. Drag the Project Status (Source) attribute into the Color By field of the Editor panel.
    4. Drag the Top Project attribute into the Break By field of the Editor panel.
  7. To filter the data that is displayed in this report, perform the following steps from the List of Portfolios report that you created as part of the Creating a report to analyze variances in portfolios task:
    1. Click the icon in the visualization title bar and then click Use As Filter....
    2. In the Filtering Options dialog box, select the project distribution report that you created as part of this task, and then click OK.
