Analyzing Time Spent

Let us consider a simple scenario to understand how you can use the Time Spent iCube to analyze the time spent by a resource on a project in a given sprint.

Consider Beth, a Project Executive who handles a team of developers, testers, and UI engineers. Beth's team works in an agile environment where, resources work on multiple projects simultaneously. It is critical for her to allocate the right resource to the right project, as there is considerable amount of time spent on each project.

One of the many analyses that Beth can do using the Plan & Create Lens of Digital.ai Intelligence Applications to analyze the ratio of time spent by an assignee with that of a non-assignee. If for a given work item, the amount of time spent by a non-assignee is unusually high, then, it is an indication that the work item was probably not assigned to the right resource.

Generating the Report

To analyze a project in terms of the total time spent on the project by an assignee versus non-assignee, Beth has to login to Digital.ai Intelligence Applications and perform the following tasks in the Time Spent iCube:

1. From the GALLERY pane, select the desired visualization type here.
   In this example, Grid has been used.
2. From the DATASETS panel:
   1. Drag the Project attribute into the Rows field of the EDITOR.
   2. Drag the Work Item attribute into the Rows field.
   3. Drag the Time Spent (Hours) metric into the Metrics field.
   4. Drag the Time Spent by Assigned To (Hours) metric into the Metrics field.
   5. Drag the Time Spent by Non-Assigned To (Hours) metric into the Metrics field.
   6. Tab across to the Filter section of the Visualization Editor and drag and drop the Project attribute. Un-check (All) and enter the project name in the search bar. Select the project.
   7. In the grid displayed, hover over on the Time Spent by Non-Assigned To (Hours), a drop down icon is displayed. Click on the drop-down icon and select Sort Ascending.

Analyzing the Report

Using the report, the Beth can analyze the following:

• What was the total time spent on a work item?
• What was the total time spent by a non-assignee on a work item?
• Work items for which assignee has spent less time than non-assignees and reason it out
• If the resource allocated for a work item was not the right person to work on it.
